SpecialSci is suitable for technology novelty searches, project tracking, academic writing and reference, teaching preparation and course development, and student learning. The database is organized into five major collections comprising 60 thematic sub-databases, covering a wide range of disciplines.

The data sources of SpecialSci mainly come from curated Internet Academic Resources (IARs). Document types include dissertations, journals, reports, conference proceedings, e-books, legislative bills, reviews, standards, new product information, teaching materials, and more, depending on the thematic collection.

As of January 2012, the SpecialSci platform contained:

• 37,000 electronic journals,
• 118,000 conference proceedings,
• 119,000 e-books,
• 75,000 dissertations,
• 160,000 technical reports,
• 250,000 curated academic websites.
