The EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) is an academic discovery system that provides seamless, one-stop access to foreign-language scholarly resources. It offers a user-friendly interface with excellent multilingual support and high-quality Chinese localization.
The system’s metadata repository comprehensively covers our library’s subscribed foreign-language academic resources and open-access (OA) materials, and integrates various specialized databases and locally developed resources. Resource types include e-books, journals, dissertations, conference papers, patents, databases, images, videos, citations, abstracts, and related literature.
Search Features:
*User-Friendly Interface: Simple and intuitive search interface with autocomplete functionality. Supports Boolean and command-based searching. Can be embedded into the library portal for quick access.
*Advanced Search: Robust advanced search with field-specific searching and filters to narrow results. Supports “search within results” and “exact match” features.
*Full-Text Search: Enables full-text keyword searching within HTML and PDF documents.
*Relevance Ranking: Results are sorted by relevance and scholarly impact. Supports relevance ranking and allows users to customize sorting where multiple options are available.
*Faceted Clustering: Offers flexible and detailed faceting options, including limits for full text, peer-reviewed status, discipline, resource type, subject, keyword, publication date, author, language, etc. Multiple facets can be selected simultaneously.
*OpenURL Linking: Supports OpenURL linking to targets such as the library’s subscribed abstract/full-text databases, the library catalog, various OA databases, reference services, and other web resources, simplifying the path to full text.
*Extended Search: Can be configured to search resources beyond the local collection and supports integration with document delivery systems like CALIS and NSTL.
*Citation Export: Allows export of search results in various citation formats (e.g., RIS, XML, BibTeX, MARC21) to reference management software such as EndNote, Reference Manager, and RefWorks.
*Search Assistance: Provides auxiliary functions like citation matching, search term correction suggestions, subject term expansion, and automatic journal matching for search results.
*E-Journal Navigation: Offers navigation services for foreign-language e-journals, including A-Z browsing and subject-based browsing. Provides details such as journal title, ISSN, publisher, subject, resource type, source database, coverage URLs, and years of coverage. Presents a unified, comprehensive listing of all library electronic resources, including e-journals, full-text databases, print journals, print books, and e-books.
*Accessibility & Translation: Includes text-to-speech for HTML full text and machine translation functionality.
*Personalization: Provides individual user accounts for personalized search settings, scheduled article alerts, and a personal folder for saving and exporting items.
