The National Science and Technology Library (NSTL) was established to meet the needs of national scientific and technological innovation. It comprehensively collects and develops scientific and technical literature across four major fields: science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine.

NSTL has evolved into a national scientific and technological literature resource support base, integrating Chinese and foreign academic journals, conference proceedings, dissertations, technical reports, scientific literature monographs, patents, standards, and metrological regulations. It combines both print and digital resources to form a complementary and comprehensive collection.

As of 2017, NSTL provides access to:

  • 24,000–26,000 kinds of foreign-language print literature, including 16,719 foreign journals and 8,134 conference proceedings
  • 519 foreign online current journals and 3,075 backfile journals available nationwide
