Borrowing Instructions

A valid Southern Medical University borrowing card is required.

2. Borrowing and Returning Procedures
Borrowing and returning can be done manually at the main service desk or via the self-service borrowing/returning equipment.

3. How to Find Books and Journals
Readers can search for the call number and location of the desired book on dedicated computers on each floor. Then, using the call number, find the book on the corresponding shelf.

(1) Our library arranges books according to call numbers. The call number consists of a classification number and a book number. Books are arranged first by classification number, and then by book number if the classification number is the same. The classification system is based on the “Chinese Library Classification”.

Example:
"English Grammar" has the call number H314/9700, where H314 is the classification number, and 9700 is the book number.
"English-Chinese Dictionary" H314/9756
"Complete English Grammar" H314-2/1538
"Stay Away from Infectious Diseases" R51/2987
"Chemistry" O6/0416
"Physics" O4/1030
"Laboratory Physiology" R13/1652

The arrangement is as follows:
"English Grammar" H314/9700
"English-Chinese Dictionary" H314/9756
"Complete English Grammar" H314-2/1538
"Physics" O4/38
"Chemistry" O6/38
"Laboratory Physiology" R13/1652
"Stay Away from Infectious Diseases" R51/2987

(2) Our library arranges periodicals alphabetically by title. Chinese periodicals are divided into two categories: "Life Sciences and Medicine" and "Non-life Sciences," sorted by the pinyin (Chinese pronunciation) of the title. Foreign periodicals are sorted alphabetically by their English title.

Example:
"Journal of Anhui University", "Weapons Knowledge", and "Bo'ai"
The order is:

"Journal of Anhui University" (an)
"Weapons Knowledge" (bing)
"Bo'ai" (bo)

Explanation: Compare the first letter of each title's pinyin. "a" comes before "b", so "Journal of Anhui University" is placed before "Weapons Knowledge" and "Bo'ai". "Weapons Knowledge" and "Bo'ai" both start with "b", so compare the second letter; since "i" comes before "o", "Weapons Knowledge" is placed before "Bo'ai", and so on.

"Acta Cytologica", "British Medical Journal", and "British Medical Bulletin"
The order is:

"Acta Cytologica"
"British Medical Bulletin"
"British Medical Journal"

Explanation: Compare the first letters of the English titles. "A" comes before "B", so "Acta Cytologica" is placed before "British Medical Journal" and "British Medical Bulletin". "British Medical Bulletin" and "British Medical Journal" have the same first two words, so compare the first letter of the third word. Since "B" comes before "J", "British Medical Bulletin" is placed before "British Medical Journal", and so on.
